The Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria
is a statutory regulatory Board under the Federal Ministry of Health. It
was established by Decree Number 61 of 1992, now CAP C 19, Laws ofthe
Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
In pursuance
of its statutory obligations and functions as clearly stated in Part 1,
Section 1 a of the Community Health Practitioners (Registration, etc)
Act, the Board is charged with the duty of "determining what standards
of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become
members of the profession of Community Health and improving those
standards from time to time as circumstances may permit." So far, about
178, 215 Practitioners made up of Community Health Officers (CHOs),
Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) and Junior Community Health
Extension Workers (JCHEWs), have been trained since 1979.
The Board has determined that standards of practice of Community
Health must continue to improve and has found Continuing Professional
Development (CPO), as a veritable means of improving these standards. To
this end, Board has approved (CPO) Programme to improve, renew and
update the skills and ability of all registered Practitioners to ensure
that appropriate and high quality health services are rendered to
patients and all members of the community.
